Madly in Love - Christina Lauren Giveaway

It's back! Madly in Love Monday, where I share some books and authors that I am "madly in love" with. I'm so excited for today's pick, Christina Lauren.

Christina Lauren is not one, but two authors who collaborate to create some phenomenal romance stories. My first introduction to them was at Comic Con this year when they participated in The Smitten Word panel. I was desperate to go to the panel as Kresley Cole, one of my all time favorite authors, was participating as well. And as expected of a panel with four different romance authors, it was full of smutty humor, lots of laughs, and thoughtful insight. Naturally, afterward, I was struck with a deep desire to pick up new books, particularly from the three authors that I had not read before. And oh boy am I glad I did because I discovered new favorites.

I received Christina Lauren's book, Beautiful Bastard, for free during one of their signing sessions. That night, despite an early morning start the next day, I stayed up until 2am reading their book. I could not put it down. This prompted me to go to their next signing and pick up a book to give away to all of you and to share the amazing story these two created. Well, instead of Beautiful Bastard, I picked up the first book in a different series of theirs, Sweet Filthy Boy, which I proceeded to also download on my kindle.

As good as Beautiful Bastard was, and it was good, Sweet Filthy Boy was even better. The characters were rich, three dimensional, and genuine. Despite being put in a crazy situation, the characters made the book feel realistic. They are the kind of characters the reader wants to cheer for.

After reading these two books, I immediately downloaded the second book in the Beautiful series, the second in the other being released this week. Once I finish reading their backlist, I am certain that Christina Lauren will be an autobuy author for me.

Sexy Saturday 11/01/14

Hope everyone had a good, safe Halloween last night! We had plenty of goblins and ghouls show up. It's so fun to see all the costumes.

Today, I'll be participating in the Sexy Saturday blog hop were authors from all over the web post seven paragraphs, sentences, or words from one of their works, published or unpublished. Each week has a theme and this weeks theme is date night. The snippet I choose isn't particularly sexy...but the scene starts and ends in sexy times, so I decided to go out on a limb and post this snippet.

Today, I thought I'd share a short snippet of Brink of Passion, the next book in my Alpine Woods Shifters series (no release date yet). I decided to choose seven sentences from my heroine Laurie's point of view after her mate, Max, displays his possessiveness while the two are in a restaurant full of shifters at a shifter convention.

She was going to kill him.

Silence descended in the restaurant. She didn't need to look around to know everyone was looking their way. Again. The only sound around them was the slight scrape of chairs against the wood floor as diners turned in their direction. Another scene to embarrass her pack. At least this time it was not her fault.

Hope you enjoyed this short snippet. Check back later for more information about Brink of Passion. And be sure to check out the other entries in the Sexy Saturday Blog Hop at http://mysexysaturday.blogspot.com/2014/10/a-sexy-date-night-mysexysaturday.html

Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween! There's something about it that makes my heart speed up with a combination of excitement, fear, and the inevitable sugar rush from too much free candy.

But there's more to the excitement than eating bags full of candy that were supposed to be for the trick-or-treaters. As Buffy the Vampire Slayer once said, "It's come as you aren't night." The one night of the year when you can completely let go. Sure, some people use it as an excuse to dress in short skirts and low shirts (nothing wrong with that). But more than just the sexy costumes, Halloween is a time when you can be anyone and anything you want to be. Always dreamed of being a pirate? You are not alone! Thought Princess Leah was the end all be all? For this one night, you can be her. It's a time to be free, and let go.

When I was little, I used to love playing dress up. Now, I only get to do it once a year, so I make sure to take the time to appreciate the day.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

What's Up Wednesday

Happy Wednesday!

Okay, I know what you're thinking. It's been ages since I've post on the blog. It's been a rocky year, but there has been workings behind the scene. So to get everyone up to date, I thought I would create a "What's Up Wednesday" feature on my blog (hopefully to be maintained weekly, but may end up being biweekly if there is not much happening weekly).

Before I get started, let me just mention that next Monday I will be holding my first of three giveaways of autographed books from some of my favorite authors. Next Monday will be Sweet Filthy Boy by the amazing romance writing duo Christina Lauren. I met these two ladies at Comic Con, and was amazed at how humble and hilarious they were. Be sure to come back then for more about them, their books, and to enter the giveaway which will be running all next week.

Now on to the good stuff!

Brink of Passion, the next installment in the Alpine Woods Shifters series featuring Laurie and Max, is complete and has been submitted to my publisher. I do not have a release date yet, but as soon as I know, I'll be sure to post it everywhere. For now, here's the *working* blub for Brink of Passion:

He’d do anything to protect his mate.
Laurie doesn't know what to think when she meets her mate at the shifter convention she'd reluctantly attended with her brother. Especially after discovering he's a cat shifter of the leopard variety. Wolves and leopards didn't typically mix. Mating him means leaving her family, her town, and the only home she's ever known. But the possibility of a happily ever after is worth the risk, right?

Max couldn't be happier with his brazen, feisty wolf, but returning home isn't the welcoming affair he'd expected. In his absence, his brother was attacked and warns him that he might be next. when the fears prove true and he's shot at while hunting with Laurie, his protective instinct goes into overdrive. Can he convince his mate to stay with him and protect her at the same time?

Saturday, I'll be posting a short excerpt, so be sure to check it out!

Excerpt from Alpine Woods Shifters WIP

Well, here it is... A short excerpt from Laurie's story. Before you ask, no, there is no set release date yet (sorry!)

I had a hard time picking out an excerpt. I wanted something from the beginning of the book, and I wanted something that really spoke "Laurie" to me, since I know many of you love her as much as I do. I ended up settling on this scene that takes place in the first chapter. Laurie has just arrived at the shifter convention with Danny.

A couple notes before the excerpt:
  • Dominic, the male shifter featured in this excerpt is NOT Laurie's mate. He is an amazing character who I fell in love with after creating him. He will be getting his own story (maybe a side series??) but let me repeat so there is no disappointment... He is NOT Laurie's mate.
  • I've taken out a paragraph and a few sentences that might confuse readers without the background/rest of chapter. So if something seems like a rough transition, that might be why.
  • This is unedited directly from the WIP! In other words, it's still in draft form. Please excuse any errors, typos, repetitiveness. All will be worked out of the final draft. There's a reason books go through an extensive editing stage with the publisher before being put up for sale.

Thanks and leave a comment to let me know what you think!

Her gaze slid over the room once more, this time absorbing more details about the people around her. Definitely a zoo.

Holy crap, were those rhino shifters? Their foreheads protruded over small beady eyes as they scanned the room. The look in their eyes was distrustful, skeptical. As if they didn’t quite know what they were doing there. They all had the same build, with large shoulder and a stocky frame. They probably all had mad football skills. If she saw one of them charging down the field toward her, she sure as hell would get out of their way.

Laurie had heard of rhino shifters before, but had never seen one. She had no idea there were rhino packs in America. Packs? What did one call a group of rhinos?

“What’s a pack of rhinos called?” A hush fell over the crowd around them, as Danny turned toward her, his eyes wide with shock.

Uh oh, had she done something wrong? Stumbled into some shifter no-no without realizing it? All she’d done was ask a question. Well, crap. She knew she wouldn’t be good at this diplomatic stuff.

“Tell me you did not just ask that, out loud, in a room full of shifters?” His whisper held disbelief, anger, and just a touch of incredulity. Laurie looked at the faces around her, all staring at her, each holding a different mixture of the same emotions Danny portrayed. Anger stronger on some, amusement stronger on others.

Risking a glance at the rhinos, Laurie tried to read their expressions, but their faces were masks of granite as they studied her right back. She lowered her head, something alpha wolves like herself really really didn’t like to do, and whispered a muted apology to Danny.

Apparently she’d screwed up. Hopefully Alpine Woods wouldn’t suffer as a result. Damn it, this was exactly why she hadn’t wanted to come. Well, not this exact situation, but something like this. There was a reason she let her brothers form their group of officers for the pack without including her. And it wasn’t because she was female as some of the men in town liked to taunt. No, it was because biting her tongue just wasn’t in her nature. If she’d tried to become one of the officers, her inability to work the political angle would have weakened the leadership as a whole, and her brothers were too good for the pack to risk them failing because of her.

Danny  sighed as he turned back around to check them into the hotel.

A pair of large feet wrapped in brown tie up dress shoes stepped into her line of vision. Old school shoes. Her gaze moved up legs the size of a tree trunk covered by a gray business suit, pausing at the overly large shoulders before moving up to collide with the slate gray eyes of one of the rhinos. For a moment, her stomach bottomed out. She was strong…for a wolf. But even she wasn’t crazy enough to want to go toe to toe with a rhino. Then she caught the slight up curve of his lips, and a breath of relief slipped out.

                “A crash,” he stated.

“Yeah, and burn,” she replied, her stomach calming at his friendly demeanor. Thank the Lord he wasn’t easily offended. It had seemed like an innocent enough question, but with this many different groups and sensitivities, she supposed everything needed to be extra PC.

“No.” His smile widened and a huff of a laugh escaped. “Well, yes.” Then he laughed for real, a deep bellow of sound that further settled her nerves. She wasn’t exactly sure what he found funny, but at least he seemed to have a sense of humor. “A group of rhinos is called a crash. Or a herd.”

“A crash?” His protruding forehead wrinkled when he raised his eyebrows. She sensed he wasn’t a person of many words. “That’s so cool. Why would you ever use herd if you could go by crash?” Laurie joked, smiling at the man.

From the corner of her eye, she saw Danny stiffen beside her. Great, had she stumbled into some other unknown shifter convention rule? Navigating this event was turning out to be trickier than a minefield.

“Hence the reason I said crash first,” the rhino joked back.

“Hi, I’m Danny, office from the Alpine Woods wolf pack,” Danny interjected, holding his hand out to the rhino in front of her.

“Dominic.” The man took his hand and shook once. Concise and authoritative. She liked it. Similar to everything else about the rhino, the brief clasp shouted power.

She was grateful he had been amused rather than offended by her innocent blunder. He was not a man she wanted as an enemy. Anyone with half a brain, including full humans, knew better than to cross a rhinoceros. Or a hippo, for that matter.

Wait…were there hippo shifters? She’d never heard of any, but that didn’t mean they didn’t exist. For years, she’d been more or less content to stay in Alpine Woods, so she hadn’t met a lot of other shifters besides those in the neighboring towns.

She opened her mouth to ask about the possibility of hippo shifters when common sense prevailed. She looked around the room at the people still watching their group, rubber necking as if they were a wreck on the highway. Correction, as if she were a wreck on the highway. No doubt those that weren’t looking still had one ear tuned in to their conversation. Laurie had already screwed up once, and she wasn’t about the give these people more of a show. At least not without charging a fee.

“Your mate is quite amusing,” the rhino told Danny. Laurie looked around for Amber, Danny’s mate, wondering why she was here when she was supposed to be in DC. Then the meaning behind his words hit. Her? She made a face even as Danny rushed to correct the man.

“Sister.” He glanced over at her and Laurie focused back on the conversation. “She means well, she just isn’t used to these conventions.”

“Unmated sister?” Dominic’s question pierced through her brain, scattering her annoyance at Danny and centering it squarely on the rhino.

“Excuse me?” she interjected. All well and fine if he wanted to hit on her, but if he was, he’d better ask her, not her brother.

“I find you amusing. There’s not enough amusement in my life.” The rhino shrugged.

“Then get a slinky. Hours of amusement.” Beside her, Danny groaned and buried his head in his hands. His distress dissipated some of her bravado.

Hadn’t she just decided smart people didn’t antagonize rhinoceroses? She’d always considered herself a smart person, but maybe it was time to reanalyze. Then the rhino laughed, and she once again thanked God the man had a sense of humor.

“I’ve had slinkys before. But you… You’re unique, and much more amusing.”

Did that mean he wasn’t going to crush her with his massive rhino fist? Seemed so. But would he push her down the stairs just to watch her tumble? That was a different question. One she didn’t have the guts to ask. “Your brother should have warned you. An unmated alpha female at these events is like a juicy steak in a tiger pit. Especially one as alluring as you.”
